This show is part of a concert series at libraries in Sonoma County in which Ancient Future bandleader Matthew Montfort performs with master musicians from many traditions.
This program of Asian fusion music showcases the improvisational abilities of scalloped fretboard guitar pioneer Matthew Montfort and Chinese pipa master Shenshen Zhang that were evident in the first notes they played together the night they met on stage at an acoustic guitar concert, which were captured on a fan video that rose to become the #1 video on the Ethnocloud Top 40 for March 2014!
Matthew Montfort has released two solo CDs: Seven Serenades for Scalloped Fretboard Guitar and Sympathetic Serenade, for which he is recognized as one of the world's 100 Greatest Acoustic Guitarists by DigitalDreamDoor.com. He has performed at the Festival Internacional de la Guitarra in Spain and the Mumbai Festival at the Gateway of India.
A native of Wenzhou, China, Shenshen Zhang began playing the pipa at the age of nine. At thirteen, she auditioned and was accepted into the prestigious Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, where in 1992, she was awarded a Bachelor's Degree. In 2005, Ms. Zhang received Master's Degree in Musicology from Xiamen University. As an award-winning concert soloist, she performed and toured extensively throughout Asia and the U.S. Ms. Zhang taught music at Stanford University and has her own pipa studio in Silicon Valley where she teaches classical Chinese music to a diverse student population.
