Both Eyes Open is a chamber opera with music ranging from soaring lyricism to taiko drumming, big band and electronic samples. Playwright/librettist, Philip Kan Gotanda, and composer, Max Giteck Duykers, tell the story of the fictional hero, Jinzo Matsumoto, a Japanese American farmer who is taken from his land in Stockton, and incarcerated at an American concentration camp in Rohwer, Arkansas, during WWII. Vivid scenic projections enhance the haunting, hyperreal tale of love, ambition, injustice and betrayal in this entertaining, yet searingly honest, portrayal of the past, to bring to light the current anti-Asian xenophobia and violence that continues today.
