Ari is a Korean word with several meanings: big river, wisdom and beauty. Ensemble Ari is a group of Korean American musicians in the Bay Area who share these qualities through music. Their mission is to bridge communities using western instruments, while honoring Korean history and culture.
In this program Ensemble Ari collaborates with Sooyeon Lyuh, master of the Korean two-stringed instrument, haeguem. Together they explore Korean traditional music, contemporary music by two Korean composers, and an arrangement of a western song cycle. The program concludes with a Dvořák piano quintet, noted for incorporating elements from Czech folk music.
Ensemble Ari's performance epitomizes the theme of Community Concerts' 5th Season, Building Bridges, by exploring how classical music can link performers and listeners together in a shared, intimate experience.
