Join us for our Speaker Series #20, a special evening with James Polack and Margit Pirsch.
James is a seasoned world traveler who has logged more miles on a bicycle than most ever will by plane. James has crossed 34 countries and pedaled more than 75,000 miles. On a bicycle the traveler sees, hears, feels, tastes, and smells every mile . . . savoring the experience with the soul.
James has embraced this lifestyle since the early 90’s. His first tour was a transcontinental adventure from Anacortes Washington to Bar Harbor Maine, south to New York City and west again to St. Louis Missouri, where winter finally forced him back home. His annual pilgrimage from Marin County to San Diego has only been interrupted by illness, or multi year tours of Europe and the Americas.
Margit Pirsch has been an intrepid global traveler ranging from Australia to building sustainable nurseries in Borneo to Thailand, Moscow, India, eastern and western Europe most of her life. Her most extreme expedition was a 30 day self supported no-sherpa trek through the Himalayas viewing Everest from across the glaciers at Gokyo Ri at 19,700 feet elevation.
Travel feeds Margit's soul and staying too long in one place numbs the soul and inspires further adventure.
Margit traded in her backpack and skis for a bicycle in 2002 and not until 2009 did she meet someone crazy enough to match her wanderlust. James and Margit have set about to minimize the global scale one country at a time. Their initial expedition was from the Arctic Circle to the Antarctic ocean.
James and Margit are currently planning an expedition from Capetown South Africa to Ulaanbaatar Mongolia and beyond.
Margit and James will share their experiences & photos of the tour of the Americas. They will enthusiastically explain what long distance bike touring is all about with a few unique stories of life on the road. Interested in bike touring? The mechanics and logistics will be explained, including gear, mechanics, weather, health etc. And yes, there will be stats . . . and their bikes.
