Equilibrium, a new exhibit, showcasing the recent work of two gallery members, Jules Campbell and Linda Ellinwood, with guest artist Lori Murphy’s Canaday Redacted, featured in the inner room gallery, will run from January 29 through March 13, 2021.
Campbell and Ellinwood are both process oriented artists. Campbell’s many layered and sanded collage surfaces are juxtaposed with and balanced by solid surfaces of brilliant color, usually orange or red/orange. Ellinwood draws from a wide assortment of organic materials - wood, kelp, pods, seeds, etc - to create her objects that seem to take on a life of their own. Both artists find their way intuitively, from beginning to completion of their works.
Canaday Redacted, Lori Murphy
“I was given a copy of one of John Canaday’s Metropolitan Seminars in Art books as a challenge to do something with it. Something about this old book spoke to me – art history with the black and white photos and text, combined with my thoughts on what it is like to be a female artist. I began tearing the book apart and working with it as a material… Things get dismantled, and then I put them back together – taking things apart and putting them back together is my way of making things right.” Quoted from an August 2020 interview.
